About the Author
Dany Laferrière worked as a journalist in his native Haiti during the notorious Duvalier regime, immigrating to Canada in 1978 after a colleague with whom he was collaborating on a story was murdered. He has also worked as a TV and radio host, screenwriter, and director. The author of 13 novels, he has won several awards, including the prestigious Prix Médicis and the Governor Generals award for a Children's novel. Dany Laferrière lives in Montreal, Canada.

Wayne Grady is the author of eleven books, the editor of fourteen literary anthologies, and the former editor of Harrowsmith magazine. One of the finest literary translators in the country, he has won the Governor General's Award for Translation and the John Glassco Prize for Literary Translation. He lives in Kingston, Ontario, and teaches creative writing and translation at the University of British Columbia.

Lukewarm despite the literal and figurative heat it offers

Perhaps, I am to blame for not being fully satisfied by reading this novel. It has been almost two years since I have taken an interest in Caribbean literature. I wanted to read a novel by a Haitian writer and Dany Laferrière was one of the few ones I found.

"Heading South" reminds me, in structure, to Mittelholzer's "A Morning at the Office", Naipaul's "Miguel Street", Selvon's "Lonely Londoners" and Condé's "Crossing the Mangrove". Laferrière's novel is made up several chapters that can be read, more or less, as single short stories, where new characters are introduced and come back in later chapters as the novel progresses.

While I like this structure, Mittelholzer's novel being my favorite so far, in "Heading South" I felt there was not enough character development or even physical descriptions. This led to being confused as to who was who, specially when a character came back into the novel several chapters later. If you ask me, all characters behaved pretty much the same way and had very similar personalities. I never had the opportunity to know a character really well, and the reason of this is that not one of them was the missing link that gave the novel unity.

I also had a problem with the sense of place in this novel. For me, a sense of place is not created by mentioning names of streets and areas in a country. This is where I am going to blame myself, because perhaps I was expecting Laferrière to be the typical Caribbean writer, where the sense of place is almost star in the Caribbean novels that I have read. In my opinion, this novel could have happened anywhere in the world. Except for brief descriptions here and there, I cannot really say I felt as if I was in Haiti, although there is brief historical context enough to let you know when the story happens

However, the novel is fluent and it keeps you writing without wanting to stop. Foreigners are all in the search of wanting to fill the void in their lives, specially now that they are in their silver years, while locals are more than willing to fill that void with their youth and their strong personalities. Of course, nothing in life is for free, but, and this is something I liked about "Heading South", not once locals behave as if deep inside they want to lead a different life. They are proud of who they are and what they can achieve with what God gave them. I liked how the characters embrace who they are without caring about morality. The characters actually give their feelings the priority they deserve, and while this "sometimes" makes them look as amoral and self-centered, this book shows us how also "sometimes" morality and selflessness contribute to our unhappiness.

Had "Heading South" included more character development and offered a more thorough sense of place, it would have been, in my humble opinion, a five star novel.

A different direction

I was partway through Leferriere's 1993 novel "An Aroma of Coffee" when I found "Heading South" in a library. This is the third Leferriere novel I've read, and its tone is so different. The author captures the spirit of an entire town, with the big interweaving cast of a Latin American storytelling novel, but the language is modern and cinematic. "Heading South" is exciting and quick paced, and the characters have nerve. In a year that has been so difficult for Haiti, it feels right to see fiction that shows the beauty and complexity of the country.

Warm and bleak at the same time

Not the only work by Dany laferriere I read, but one of my favorite ones.
Raises important questions about a certain kind of tourism in the "South", and the northern societies that produce it.
Highly recommended if you are interested into (re-)discover this great author.

Same Concepts With A Different Coat Of Paint

Most marketing books say the same basic things using different analogies, stories, etc. Duct Tape Marketing, along with Seth Godin's books are good examples of this. What they teach is nothing new, and that's fine as long as you understand there aren't any miracles cures when it comes to a successful marketing campaign. There's only testing, making adjustments, and then keeping what sticks and getting rid of the rest. The reason marketing will never really change is because people never really change, either. What changes is how creative we can be in our presentation - making old things seem new.

If you buy Duct Tape Marketing and follow what it says, testing as you go... you can have good success. Having been in marketing for 20+ years, I can say that confidently. Most people, however, are looking for a magic bullet. As a result, they jump from book to book and course to course with a "slot machine" mentality. Avoiding this is will make your journey to the top much easier. I wish I knew this when I first started. I finally learned, though. And that's when really good things started happening.

Bottom line, if you're a newbie to marketing, this book can certainly help you. If you've been at it for some time, this book is only going to remind you of what you already know. If you're in that position, stop reading books about marketing and learn from your own "hands on" experience.

It's a good read. Here's more advice.

Here's something I thought up that worked amazing for me.

1. Start a blog
2. Call up potential businesses you want to do business with. Tell them you're fascinated by what they do and you want to interview the owner and write an article on your blog about them. Flatter them. Tell the truth, just focus on the positives.
3. During the interview the owner will inevitably ask what you do.
4. Sell yourself / service to them.
5. Write the blog. Put links to their site. They will inevitably put a link on their site to your site. Capitalize on relevant searches. SEO at it's finest.

Both parties win. I only needed to meet with three business owners before I had enough business to work full time.

One of the best marketing books I've ever read

John's book is one of the best marketing books I've ever read. Being from the south where we make prom dresses and tuxedos from Duct Tape, I'm well acquainted with the many uses of Duct Tape -- from removing warts to patching boats and making clothing. So I was naturally attracted to the cover. I had never seen Duct Tape used to market anything!

Of course the theme is "Stickiness - marketing that sticks like Duct Tape." What I love about this book begins in the table of contents. John outlines the content in parts (Part I, II, III) and then leads the reader through a very comprehensive and detailed list of what to do: Strategy before tactics, Identify your ideal client, and so on...right through every single step you'll need to build your foundation. Check out the Contents for more detail. The thing is I feel like John is sitting across the table talking to me as he writes.

There's no fluff and no blowing smoke up my bum, or padding the pages. You get specific, matter-of-fact advice. There's no hype, no trying to convince or sell you anything. It's real. It's simple. It's serious advice you can use, no matter what stage of business you're in.

I love his action steps at the end of each chapter - ways you can make a difference in your business NOW, today!

He also breaks down his chapters into segments, bolding each idea or process, for instance. "Write a blog" is bolded and then there's a paragraph on that, then "Guest post on blogs," and a paragraph on that. You can skim this book (I confess I did that the minute I got it), find what you need and then read more later. I finally sat down to read it because skimming it was so damn interesting!

John gives you facts, stats and tips. You can't read this book, set it down and walk away feeling nothing. After reading it you think anything is possible.

I rank it right up there with Mike Michalowicz's The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field and Seth Godin's Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us. John is an amazing business resource and you won't find any business book better than this one. Definitely a resource, a reference and something you want to send your friends. It's on my list of "Must read books" I tell my clients about!

But Quidditch buffs need not go into mourning: we get our share of this great game at the World Cup. Attempting to go incognito as Muggles, 100,000 witches and wizards converge on a "nice deserted moor." As ever, Rowling magicks up the details that make her world so vivid, and so comic. Several spectators' tents, for instance, are entirely unquotidian. One is a minipalace, complete with live peacocks; another has three floors and multiple turrets. And the sports paraphernalia on offer includes rosettes "squealing the names of the players" as well as "tiny models of Firebolts that really flew, and collectible figures of famous players, which strolled across the palm of your hand, preening themselves." Needless to say, the two teams are decidedly different, down to their mascots. Bulgaria is supported by the beautiful veela, who instantly enchant everyone--including Ireland's supporters--over to their side. Until, that is, thousands of tiny cheerleaders engage in some pyrotechnics of their own: "The leprechauns had risen into the air again, and this time, they formed a giant hand, which was making a very rude sign indeed at the veela across the field."

Long before her fourth installment appeared, Rowling warned that it would be darker, and it's true that every exhilaration is equaled by a moment that has us fearing for Harry's life, the book's emotions running as deep as its dangers. Along the way, though, she conjures up such new characters as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, a Dark Wizard catcher who may or may not be getting paranoid in his old age, and Rita Skeeter, who beetles around Hogwarts in search of stories. Even without the unprecedented media attention and popularity her magical series has attracted, it would seem too much to hope that Rowling could sustain the brilliance and wit of her first three novels. Astonishingly, Rowling seems to have the spell-casting powers she assigns her characters: this fourth volume might be her most thrilling yet. The novel opens as a confused Muggle overhears Lord Voldemort and his henchman, Wormtail (the escapee from book three, Azkaban) discussing a murder and plotting more deaths (and invoking Harry Potter's name); clues suggest that Voldemort and Wormtail's location will prove highly significant. From here it takes a while (perhaps slightly too long a while) for Harry and his friends to get back to the Hogwarts school, where Rowling is on surest footing. Headmaster Dumbledore appalls everyone by declaring that Quidditch competition has been canceled for the year; then he makes the exciting announcement that the Triwizard Tournament is to be held after a cessation of many hundred years (it was discontinued, he explains, because the death toll mounted so high). One representative from each of the three largest wizardry schools of Europe (sinister Durmstrang, luxurious Beauxbatons and Hogwarts) are to be chosen by the Goblet of Fire; because of the mortal dangers, Dumbledore casts a spell that allows only students who are at least 17 to drop their names into the Goblet. Thus no one foresees that the Goblet will announce a fourth candidate: Harry. Who has put his name into the Goblet, and how is his participation in the tournament linked, as it surely must be, to Voldemort's newest plot? The details are as ingenious and original as ever, and somehow (for catching readers off-guard must certainly get more difficult with each successive volume) Rowling plants the red herrings, the artful clues and tricky surprises that disarm the most attentive audience. A climax even more spectacular than that of Azkaban will leave readers breathless. Grade 4 Up-Harry is now 14 years old and in his fourth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where big changes are afoot. This year, instead of the usual Inter-House Quidditch Cup, a Triwizard Tournament will be held, during which three champions, one from each of three schools of wizardry (Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beaux-batons), must complete three challenging magical tasks. The competitors must be at least 17 years old, but the Goblet of Fire that determines the champions mysteriously produces Harry's name, so he becomes an unwilling fourth contestant. Meanwhile, it is obvious to the boy's allies that the evil Voldemort will use the Tournament to get at Harry. This hefty volume is brimming with all of the imagination, humor, and suspense that characterized the first books. So many characters, both new and familiar, are so busily scheming, spying, studying, worrying, fulminating, and suffering from unrequited first love that it is a wonder that Rowling can keep track, much less control, of all the plot lines. She does, though, balancing humor, malevolence, school-day tedium, and shocking revelations with the aplomb of a circus performer. The Triwizard Tournament itself is a bit of a letdown, since Harry is able, with a little help from his friends and even enemies, to perform the tasks easily. This fourth installment, with its deaths, a sinister ending, and an older and more shaken protagonist, surely marks the beginning of a very exciting and serious battle between the forces of light and dark, and Harry's fans will be right there with him.

Very disappointed by my copy.

I was very excited to finally own a hard copy version of a Harry Potter book amd the package arrived on time and was in good condition. However, when I opened the book itself, I found that pages 333-336 were totally shredded. I was so sad at this because I wanted to start reading immediately. How can I fix this, Amazon? I live in Trinidad and Tobago.

I wasn't caught up in the initial hype over this series, but after seeing several of my kids and wife immensely enjoy these books I began to think maybe I should read them myself. After having attended numerous Harry Potter themed parties from such occasions as a nearby city museum's Halloween party themed around Harry Potter to a surprise birthday party for a daughter, Harry Potter has been a fun theme that has brought fun and joy to numerous social occasions with my family and friends. I finally began reading the Harry potter book series and find them as enjoyable as many of my favorite books from childhood like the chronicles of Narnia or the castle of Llyr. Thanks mrs Rowling for bringing such joy to me and my family and providing an excuse for a great theme to build memories around!

Do not buy Kindle version - defective

The Kindle version is defective as some reviewers wrote (I wish I had read them before I purchased), on an iPad with Kindle app in my case. When reading with the device held in landspace (side ways) position, the last sentence on the first column repeats at the beginning of the second column on every page. Additionally, sections of certain sentences are missing randomly. Oddly, this problem seems to go away when the device is held in portrait orientation.

I chatted with Amazon tech support, but after trying several fixes nothing helped and they are giving me a credit for the purchase. They also told me that this version will not be available for purchase until the problem is fixed, but I still see it listed for purchase. So, buyers beware.

A Wonderful Love Story that Defines True Marriage......

Before reading this book I used to wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then. But after reading this book, Love after Marriage, this quote comes to my mind “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” The author does a beautiful job of drawing the characters and showing all the ins and outs of a complicated but very different story line. If you're looking for a fascinating love story after marriage, this is it! It's beautifully written and grabs you from the beginning with the promise of taking you through a memorable journey. I've given this book as a gift to many friends who are in the process of discovering the true love with their married partners, a major focus in this novel. When you finish this book it would be a good question to ask yourself if you would have wanted to be any of these characters. For me this was a very pleasurable read. The people are fascinating, and the language is lovely. Bhagya is a fine writer, clear and easy reading. What a delightful and insightful book on many levels...., I am sure married people will have enough to take away from this book to enrich, enhance and strength their love lives and rightly understand and respect their partners!

A deeply emotional read

The author takes us into a deep journey of arranged marriages. All characters reveal their softer side and their illogical side. The main protagonist reveals the time tested truism of Indian arranged marriages....that you marry a family. The book has a very conversational style which suits me and the author does a great job setting up scenes that a reader (particularly those not familiar with Indian family setups) may find rather intriguing yet delightful. The book could have been a bit more nuanced in its treatment of characters.

In essence, the books reveals that there is no perfect companion. What is perfect today will change and the only way to lead a happy life is to adjust, compromise and on a an occasion be stern. I recommend this book to all. For Indians, it may bring out some raw emotions of their own and for a non Indian reader, the book gives a great insight into what works in Indian marriages and that love after marriage is indeed enduring albeit with a lot of speed bumps and trenches. Indeed such is life.

Congratulations to Bhagya on her first book and hope to read more books by her.

It's a First Book

I thought this book would be really interesting and enjoyable since it was about India. However, it really wasn't, because it was too bogged down with expository writing. Everything was told to us, everything. She was angry, but we don't see her anger, we don't feel her anger, we don't hear her anger, we are told that she is angry. The book tends to read like a list. She said this is a certain way. He turned his head and said something. They ate food. They talked some more. They went home. The sentences tend to be very short, very simple, and very void of feeling. It felt clunky and didn't flow, I never connected to anyone and never felt what the characters were feeling. I felt like I was reading a really long outline or a list of events, not a story.

Additionally, there were some errors, such as using bete and beti interchangeably. There were repetitive words in the same sentence: he was handsome and good looking. She was pretty and beautiful. Then there were repetitive sentences, he was angry in this sentence and the next sentence tells us that he was furious. Then there were poorly written descriptions, the wedding talks about him putting the sindoor on her forehead at her hairline, but it says it in a way that left me baffled until I called to mind the Bollywood movies I had seen. Further, the book will use Indian terms that are undefined, use Indian terms and give an English translation or definition in parenthesis, and use English terms and put an Indian translation in parenthesis. This format made it confusing. I also found myself calling upon my large store of Bollywood movies and the bits and pieces of language I'd picked up from them to understand what was being said and done in the book.

I think it was a good plot idea and full of interesting details, but I couldn't finish the book. It was too choppy, too confusing, too much like a list, not enough like a good story for me to enjoy.
