Don't be offended by this book...

Brant Hansen says that we have no right to be angry. It’s not our job to “set people straight” or “take a stand:”

“God ‘needs’ nothing. Quit trying to parent the whole world. Quit offering advice when exactly zero people asked for it. Quit being shocked when people don’t share your morality....Quit thinking you need to ‘discern’ what others’ motives are….It’s all so exhausting.”

There’s no such thing, he writes, as “righteous anger.” Our anger isn’t righteous. To think that our anger is righteous is to assume that our beliefs and motives are always right, and the other person’s are wrong.

“If this is, in fact, what we’re supposed to do—experience ‘righteous anger’ whenever we’re made aware of one of God’s commands being broken—we’ll be precisely what the world doesn’t need and largely believes we already are: a bunch of uptight, seething hypocrites.”

Hansen is clear that he’s not saying we should ignore injustice. But we should act against injustice, not get angry about it. And we should act out of love, not anger.

“What the world needs, I think you’ll agree, is not a group of people patting themselves on the back for being angry. We need people who actually act to set things right.”

Here’s the great thing, according to Hansen. Choosing to not be offended will make our life better. Giving up our perceived right to anger will make us happier and healthier. And will probably make people take us more seriously. No one wants to be around an angry, judgmental person.

Hansen’s writing style is clear and simple. His book is expertly written. His logic is perfect. He’s funny. He’s not preachy or judgmental, even toward the judgmental. His book is excellent. And, I think, this sums it up:

“Love people where they are, and love them boldly. And if you really want to go crazy, like them too.”

A Challenge We All Need to Take

I'm not really sure where to start with this review...This book was so challenging that I feel that I need to go through it again. Mind you, it wasn't challenging on a readability level - it was actually a relatively "easy" read as far as the words go. It's the concept that challenged me...I have no right to get offended, no right to "righteous" anger? That's not an easy concept to grasp.

From the dedication (To all those who want grace for themselves, but struggle to extend it to others. Wait: that's everybody), to the very end, Hansen points out that it's not my "job" to fret over what everyone else is doing wrong; I am not in control. It calls me to let go of the idea that I have any control over people, places and situations, because I don't. In chapter 2, he says, "Being offended is a tiring business. Letting go gives you energy.", and "I can let stuff go because it's not all about me. Simply reminding myself to refuse to take offense is a big part of the battle." And he's right...Since finishing the book, I now make a concerted effort to stop and remind myself that it's truly not about me. When someone cuts me off in traffic...well, I've undoubtedly done the same thing or worse. Through this book, I am working on not being surprised or upset at other's failures, as well as my own. It's freeing me to love people (and myself) just as we are.

Brant backs up his book clearly with scripture in an easily understood way. He uses personal experiences and shares his struggles which makes the book real. Even though it's challenging on a spiritual, personal level, it's written in a fun way. If you have ever listened to Brant Hansen on the radio, you know that he has a somewhat "warped" sense of humor, and you never really know what he might say next. It's the same in the book. He makes this concept a bit easier to digest because you know he is right there with you.

Great Read with a Palatable Challenge

If you just look at the title of Brant Hansen's Unoffendable- How Just One Change Can Make All of Life Better, it appears to be another self help book designed to teach the reader how to develop a tough skin. That assumption couldn't be further from the truth.

I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of the book. It is written from a Christian point of view, but even skeptics will be able to get something out of this book and enjoy it in the process. Hansen isn't preachy or teachy. He doesn't even come off as an expert on the subject. In fact, each page is laced with humility which is very appropriate for the subject matter because through the pages, we discover how important humility is in being unoffendable.

Hansen chides those that want to cherry-pick scriptures justifying their anger and has a firm answer to them, but of course he does it without taking offense.

The unoffendable message is given to the reader packed with humorous and heart touching stories told in Hansen’s quirky, but charming way. He draws on Christian authors and artists and isn’t shy about picking on evangelical culture, as much as he does himself.

What I found out as I approached the end of the book was that Brant Hansen is right. I was not as prone to be offended in my daily life as I was before reading. Sure, I had times where the gut reaction of offense wanted to surface, but from reading the book being unoffendable wasn't quite as difficult as it was before and will probably get even easier day by day unless I turn loose of the concept. I do not plan to do that because I prefer peace in my life rather than strife.

I whole-heartedly recommend Unoffendable by Brant Hansen. Although it helped me a great deal, it doesn’t come off as a self-help book. It is more like a memoir or an amusing conversation with an interesting friend at a coffee shop. It was so enjoyable that I was always ready for another cup.

I purchased this book because it is one of the very few written about citing textual evidence. As a teacher, I was looking for best practices for teaching. This book is oriented toward students who want to successfully cite text evidence, and perhaps it is helpful for that scenario. It is not at all what I was looking for.

Detailed, complex but ultimately rewarding

Ian Tattersall's _The Fossil Trail_ traces the evolution of scientific undestanding of human origins in exquisite detail and in a language that is understandable to the lay reader. The book is rich with scale diagrams of the fossil record of early hominids, presenting the various theories of human evolution from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Because of the subject matter and the aim of the book, it is dense reading, and it clearly is not for everyone. Nonetheless it is a fascinating and rewarding book.

Fossilized Writing

How do you read a book for pleasure when the author is constantly stopping you from advancing by using one word parenthetical expressions? The answer is that you can't. This tome by Tattersall is in dire need of a good editing. It should be a warning for all those who would read scientific books; when the credits do not contain an "edited by" recognition, be wary.
Don't get me wrong, Tattersall tackles an incredibly difficult topic and does a great job with the chronology and with the scientific facts. The problem is that his prose and grammar are so dreadful that the book is painfully difficult to read. Tattersall is constantly badgering the reader with silly, needless one word parenthetic expressions.
Moreover, then, of course, indeed, you could choose to ignore these, well, annoying little pauses. And, therefore, you might, remakably, gain some knowledge and, well, insight into a, mostly, difficult subject. But, the fact that the book is so, well, scientifically informative, well, mostly.
ENOUGH ALREADY!! Buy a red pencil and use it. A copy editor at a weekly local newspaper could have edited this book on short notice and made it a five star candidate in about two hours. Why no editor? I have no idea. I am surprised that Oxford Press would print a book with such glaring grammatical nonsense. The problem is that scientists think that their peers will forgive their literary gobbledygook if the topic has innate merit and the scientist has authority in the subject.
My recommendation is to pass on this book. There are many other books that will give you the same information less painfully.

Wrong title

I think this should have been called "How We CAME to Know What We Think We Know About Human Evolution". It is more of a history of discoveries than discussion on conclusions based on those discoveries.
This is my first read in paleoanthropology and I found it a bit difficult. In some cases, discussion on historical hypothesis were glossed over where I felt they could have been elaborated. Although Tattersall comes across as intelligent, I found it to be a slow read due to both vocabulary and flow. Overall, not recommended as a pleasure read.

First of all this 'book' is very short. I expected an in depth perspective on the various attributes needed to make a profitable enterprise in the data-oriented business structure but just didn't think that this delivered.
I don't remember if I paid for this or not. It would be fine if it were free but if I paid more than $1.99 then I paid too much.

Disappointed

I was disappointed because the piano songs on the CD have instrumental accompaniments, and I found the accompaniments distracting, as I really only wanted to hear what was printed on the page of Alfred's piano book (so I could hear what it is supposed to sound like, of course, when I play it). I am certainly not going to have these accompaniments at home, when I am practicing.

Finding Hiden Treasures

Danni Ackerman and Kat Simpson expanded my mind while shopping for product to resell. In the Ultimate Guide to Savings by Store, the authors tell about some places to shop for products I never considered. They share where to shop, but more than that, how to shop within a store. They discuss the type of merchandise typically supplied at the stores and where the "goodies" are that can add profit to a reseller.

One thing I love about the book is learning of all the possible discounts that can be had at various stores. The book goes in to detail on how to save money at each store it reviews. Some discounted options may be obvious, but some are ones I would never have learned about without this book. For example, spending $1,000 a year at one retail store, I can qualify for "elite status" which allows me to use all possible coupons without having to "coupon clip" ahead of time if I even would know a coupon existed. Without this book, I would never know that kind of option existed.

Danni and Kat help you identify the type of products to look for at various stores. They have helped me to start expanding my product line for more interesting and fun "treasures". I'll take this book with me when I travel as I may run across one of the stores they mention that I do not have in my area. With the book in my bag, I'm ready to stock my ebay store (FoundTreasureChest, FoundTreasureChest.com) with all kinds of treasures!

Kat, Danni and their contributing authors have put together a useful book for those interested in getting the most from retail shopping, retail arbitrage to be specific.

Featuring 50 stores, from Ace Hardware to Winn-Dixie, you'll find information about store layout, store merchandise, sales and sale policies, coupon details, pricing and price match policies, and store rewards programs.

Want to know what those asterisks on Costco price cards mean? You'll find out here. Want to know the best days to shop at Salvation Army stores? You'll find it here. You'll also find information about store web sites and social media links. Color photographs illustrate most of the articles.

It's obvious that Kat and Danni are experienced shoppers and I am not. I have learned a lot from their experience and I know that I'll be able to make much more intelligent decisions in the future. Having a peek behind the curtain of these retail stores puts me in a more powerful position, whether it be allocating my TIME in choosing which store to source from, or allocating my MONEY and making sure I get the best deals possible.
