From the Author
PREFACE OF NOURISHING HOPE:Since I began my professional studies in holistic nutrition and biochemistry, I have been particularly fascinated with nutrition for human development--that is, nutrition for children. From the onset, I investigated how artificial ingredients, low nutrient foods, and sugars were implicated in a wide range of newly epidemic disorders in children, particularly ADHD, type 2 diabetes ("adult-onset"), heart disease, and even autism.
Once I discovered that imbalanced biochemical pathways influence the symptoms of ADHD and autism and that food, nutrition, and proper supplementation can have significant impact on these disorders, I was drawn to learn and understand more. There are many people striving to help these children: parents, doctors, caregivers, educators, therapists, advocacy groups, nutritionists, researchers and research groups. If all of these people could better comprehend these factors and influences, we could use our collective knowledge to better help these children and their families. As I researched important subjects such as liver function, endocrine imbalance, the immune system, and food sensitivities, I would always ask the question, "How is this implicated in autism spectrum disorders, and how do we impact it through nutritional or supplemental interventions?"
Nourishing Hope is the culmination of seven years of research into and clinical experience with autism spectrum disorder and the affects of nutrition, environmental factors, and biochemical imbalances on these conditions. In this time, I have consulted with hundreds with children on the spectrum, read countless books and research papers, routinely attended (and now present at) leading conferences on the subject, interviewed leading-edge researchers, and collaborated with dozens of doctors and their patients. My work continues steadfastly. I consult with parents and physicians through my office in San Francisco, and clients across the world by telephone. I am driven to share what I have learned and continue to learn. We all must share what we know so that all children on the spectrum and their families may harvest the life-bringing energies of hope. I believe that all people are worthy of (and deserve) hope--it is an inherently human capacity that, when nourished always leads to some positive outcome.
To Parents: I hope this book will educate and empower your active role in choosing and co-creating with your health care practitioner the best path for your child. While we all need help and guidance, decisions regarding the direction to take with your child's health are uniquely personal. There is new, changing, and controversial information and only you can decide what directions you are willing to go. My desire is that this book will assist you in discussing information and strategizing approaches with your healthcare practitioners. It is for you, the courageous parents, and your children, that I press on in search of answers and more ways to help.
To Doctors: I hope this book will inform you, your practice, and your efforts to help these children. You who are diligently on the front lines with these kids, their parents, and the many institutions trying both discover what is going on, and how to best provide help. I honor your work and intend to serve as best I can the continually emerging body of knowledge and practice that nourishes hope for parents, practitioners, and the children we love.
To Nutrition and Holistic Colleagues:I hope this book inspires interest in applying your knowledge of health and healing in even broader ways. We are in this together. There are many children and families out there who need our help. May this book (and my experience and research) help further your work. Your experience, thoughts, and suggestions are welcome.
Please feel free to write to me: I am also open to your feedback on where to clarify, add, or correct information. Thank you for your support. I wish you all the best on this path to healing.
My desire is that this book will help you physically nourish yourselves and your children toward health, and nourish hope within you that there is a way, there is a path to healing.

A Must have when your child is dx w/autism
By Kathleen Reardon
This book is been very helpful.I refer to it all the time. Julie has explained it all! I have the cooking to heal cook book and use it often. She explains that when the gut begins to heal children often will eat other foods that are more healthful. To my amazment my daughter dx w/autism at 2.5 ate nothing but crackers, bread, pasta. Now 3.5 years into this diet program. IM happy to say she is eating fermented saurkraut, fermented pickles, organic chicken soup, fruit, vegetables and the list goes on! Her progress is amazing
stimming is decreasing daily, play skills developed overnight(just this summer)and she taught herself to read. I owe it ALL to diet!
Hold on to hope its takes a while but when it happens its amazing.

Great resource for parents
By Irish Kriss
This is at the top of my list for great books on ASDs. I refer to it time and again. I wish all parents of ASD kids would read this book and treat it as a medical illness. It really brought everything together for me and gave me a solid understanding of my son's problems. Julie provides a solid foundation that is well organized and easy to understand. Any treatment you may be thinking about, she explains in great detail. Great practical advice. Reading this was almost like going through an initial consultation. It contains so much more info than my son's DAN! (now ex-DAN) ever gave me.
I only wish she would have written more about chelation instead of referring the reader on to Cutler. She goes into detail about toxic metals, but not so much on how to get rid of them. Cutler, while a great resource, is not well written, well organized or easy to follow. We, as parents, are left to muddle through it ourselves, with little available guidance.
Thanks to Julie for writing such a comprehensive book on biomedical interventions for autism!

Review from an ASD child's mom
By Kate
If you are new to the world of Autism, or new to Biomedical treatments, this is the book you need! I am mommy to 2 1/2 year old Aden, who was diagnosed in Nov. on the Autism spectrum.
We started down this road in April 08, and knew very very little about Autism. When he was officially diagnosed in Nov. the Developemental Pediatrician that we saw handed us a stack of papers to read, said "don't try any CAM treatments because they don't work", and pushed us out the door. We were left with a, hey sorry your kid is autistic and there isn't much we can do. Thankfully, we didn't listen and decided to take a different road. We got this book very soon after, and it was and continues to be a HUGE help for us in our understanding of this disorder, and a great reference gude, especially on the nutrition side of it. We've learnded so much because of it!
There IS HOPE for these kids. Because of what we have done Biomedically and with therapy and early intervention classes, Aden is well on his way to recovery! Such progress has been made already in just over a month!
THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE for anyone who has a child on the spectrum.
