The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak

The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that is now a major motion picture, Markus Zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 9 Up–Zusak has created a work that deserves the attention of sophisticated teen and adult readers. Death himself narrates the World War II-era story of Liesel Meminger from the time she is taken, at age nine, to live in Molching, Germany, with a foster family in a working-class neighborhood of tough kids, acid-tongued mothers, and loving fathers who earn their living by the work of their hands. The child arrives having just stolen her first book–although she has not yet learned how to read–and her foster father uses it, The Gravediggers Handbook, to lull her to sleep when shes roused by regular nightmares about her younger brothers death. Across the ensuing years of the late 1930s and into the 1940s, Liesel collects more stolen books as well as a peculiar set of friends: the boy Rudy, the Jewish refugee Max, the mayors reclusive wife (who has a whole library from which she allows Liesel to steal), and especially her foster parents. Zusak not only creates a mesmerizing and original story but also writes with poetic syntax, causing readers to deliberate over phrases and lines, even as the action impels them forward. Death is not a sentimental storyteller, but he does attend to an array of satisfying details, giving Liesels story all the nuances of chance, folly, and fulfilled expectation that it deserves. An extraordinary narrative.–Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, took a risk with his second book by making Death an omniscient narrator—and it largely paid off. Originally published in Australia and marketed for ages 12 and up, The Book Thief will appeal both to sophisticated teens and adults with its engaging characters and heartbreaking story. The Philadelphia Inquirer compared the book's power to that of a graphic novel, with its "bold blocks of action." If Zusak's postmodern insertions (Death's commentary, for example) didn't please everyone, the only serious criticism came from Janet Maslin, who faulted the book's "Vonnegut whimsy" and Lemony Snicket-like manipulation. Yet even she admitted that The Book Thief "will be widely read and admired because it tells a story in which books become treasures." And, as we all know, "there's no arguing with a sentiment like that."

From Booklist
Gr. 10-12. Death is the narrator of this lengthy, powerful story of a town in Nazi Germany. He is a kindly, caring Death, overwhelmed by the souls he has to collect from people in the gas chambers, from soldiers on the battlefields, and from civilians killed in bombings. Death focuses on a young orphan, Liesl; her loving foster parents; the Jewish fugitive they are hiding; and a wild but gentle teen neighbor, Rudy, who defies the Hitler Youth and convinces Liesl to steal for fun. After Liesl learns to read, she steals books from everywhere. When she reads a book in the bomb shelter, even a Nazi woman is enthralled. Then the book thief writes her own story. There's too much commentary at the outset, and too much switching from past to present time, but as in Zusak's enthralling I Am the Messenger (2004), the astonishing characters, drawn without sentimentality, will grab readers. More than the overt message about the power of words, it's Liesl's confrontation with horrifying cruelty and her discovery of kindness in unexpected places that tell the heartbreaking truth. A story I will revisit often
By Meagan
I LOVED this book. We started listening to the audio version in the car before I bought the paperback. My son is an audio learner, so we are constantly looking for books to listen to. We had recently listened to another WW2 book told from a kid's perspective. This was recommended to us, but we were warned the content was much more mature than the first book, even though it is also focused on a "child". While that was true, it wasn't a bad thing. I really enjoyed the narrator for the audio book, and I am quite picky. I ended up buying the paperback because I couldn't stand to wait to see what happened since I only listened with my son in the car. I was enjoying it enough to think it was worth the purchase. I'm glad I bought it. It is "heavy" but I did fall in love with the characters and know I'll be revisiting it again and again. One thing that I found unique about this book was that it was told from the view of "death", or maybe a grim reaper...but it is not in any way fantasy. Looking back, I can't imagine it being told from any other perspective and I'm so glad the author seemed to realize that too.

The Book Thief This is a beautifully balanced piece of storytelling by a young Australian writer
By Amazon Customer
The Book Thief
This is a beautifully balanced piece of storytelling by a young Australian writer: Marcus Zusak. The book is narrated by death himself. Death is rendered vividly. He is a lonely, haunted being who is drawn to children, who has had a lot of time to contemplate human nature and wonder about it. We are introduced to this narrator in the beginning and he is with us till the very end. It gives away the end and still wants you to keep reading on.
The narrative is easy flowing with glimpses of what is yet to come: sometimes misleading, sometimes all too true. We meet all shades of Germans, from truly committed Nazis to the likes of poor Hans Hubermann who hides a Jew in the basement of his very modest home. I was humbled by the realization that most of us are incapable of doing what noble souls Hans and Rosa do for saving the human race. This is what makes this novel truly remarkable.
The author says he was inspired by two real-life events related to him by his German parents: the bombing of Munich, and a teenage boy offering bread to an emaciated, withered Jew being marched through the streets. Both the boy and Jewish prisoner were whipped by a soldier while hapless crowd looked on! It is also the way in which Zusak combines such terrible events with truly believable characters and the details of everyday life in Nazi Germany. All this made The Book Thief so special for me.
In addition to the protagonist Liesel (the book thief of the title), there are some very important characters in the story. Those who particularly stood out for me are Rudy Steiner, a close friend of Liesel who is obsessed with the black athlete Jesse Owens. Ilsa Hermann, the mayor's wife, who has never recovered from the loss of her own son. Liesel's adoptive parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann and of course Max Vandenburg the Jew decorator whose father had saved Hans’ life during the first world war when they are both German soldiers. The growing relationships between Hubermanns and Liesel and, later, Liesel and Max Vandenburg are central to the plot. Max writes and illustrates a strangely beautiful short story for Liesel over whitewashed pages from a copy of Hitler's Mein Kampf (the original print can still be seen through the paint). The powerful short story and illustrations almost broke my heart.
Hans, who can’t read very well himself, teaches Liesel to read. Liesel is effectively an orphan. She never knew her father. Her mother disappears after delivering her to her new foster parents. Her younger brother died on the train to Molching where the foster parents live. Death first encounters nine-year-old Liesel when her brother dies. It (death) hangs around long enough to watch Liesel steal her first book - The Gravedigger's Handbook, left lying in the snow by her brother's grave. Death has in his possession (I have always considered death as ‘she’) the book Leisel wrote about 1939 to 1943. In a way, they are both book thieves. Liesel steals randomly at first, and later more methodically. But she's never greedy. Death pockets Liesel's notebook after she leaves it, forgotten in her grief, amongst the destruction that was once her street, her home, her mama and papa. Death carries the book with him.
As I went through the book I kept feeling how real Liesel was! She was a child living a child's life. A life that has chores, soccer in the street, stolen pleasures, school fights, sudden passions and a full heart! Around her bombs are dropped, maimed veterans hang themselves, bereaved parents move like ghosts, Gestapo take children away and the dirty skeletons of Jews are paraded through the town.
However, there are a number of things that prevent this book from being all-out depressing. It is very powerful from the beginning but not morbid. A lively humor peeks through the pages. (a comment about German’s loving pigs, the childish chats between Rudi and Liesel). Furthermore, the vivid descriptions as well as the richness of the characters lift your spirits up. In this balanced story, ordinary Germans - those with blond hair and blue eyes are as much at risk of losing their lives, or are being persecuted, as the Jews themselves. It made me cry.

Wow
By Knightsbridgelvr
I just finished reading this book and I wanted to rush here to write down my thoughts but now I realize that there are too many to summarize in a simple book review.

Many have said this about "The Book Thief" but it is truly an endearing story. Throughout the entire book, I kept thinking to myself, how can the same species of human beings be so absolutely dreadfully evil and also be so strong, brave, hopeful, and loving?

The evil side of humanity was shown, obviously, in the power plays of Hitler shown not primarily through a Jew's point of view like a lot of Holocaust/WWII stories but from the point of view of a living-in-poverty German family who were also victimized by Hitler, obviously in a different way but stricken nonetheless.

The hopeful and loving side of humanity was shown not in the obvious ways. But in the way that Liesel and Rudy always stood by each other no matter what even while throwing insults at each other. In the way that Hans embraced a girl as his own daughter without question. In the way that the mayor's wife indirectly gave Liesel her most treasured possessions and, eventually, a safe place to grow up. In the way that a little German girl connected with the Jewish young man hiding in her basement and created a bond of souls that surpassed words (though ironically created by words themselves through books).

And although the subject of this book was very heavy and dark, there were moments that made me laugh. Not because the circumstances were funny, but because of the things the characters would say in such circumstances. For example, after Liesel and Rudy steal a plate of cookies, their most pressing thought is, "What are we going to do with the plate?"

But there are 2 lines in this book that are so profound and will stay with me forever. The first line serves as a wonderful example of how artfully Markus Zusak wrote this story. The book is narrated by death and at one point death says, "It kills me sometimes, how people die." What an interesting and ironic line. Even death itself can be shocked at how people die. I would like to think that if death was a personified being, he really would say something like that.

The second line is the last line of the book. We readers are concluded with death's last note, "I am haunted by humans." As this beautiful, tragic tale comes to an end, I too am haunted by humans--the characters of this story.

Read this book.

Second chances...

While successful in her engineering career, Candy Dillon has never allowed herself to have carefree fun. The realization came to light after the passing of her beloved father. Candy realizes that she is heading down the same path as her father. But, things are about to quickly change as her childhood friend, Jeremiah Lange is determined to put some thrill in her life.

Jeremiah Lange cannot believe his luck. Ten years ago, he allowed the only woman who has held the key to his heart slip through his fingers in order to follow his dreams of performing in the rodeo circuit and country music singing to take the forefront. Now, that Candy Dillon has resurfaced back in his life, Jeremiah is determined not to let his `sugar girl' go without a fight. Will he convince her that they belong together?

Sugar Girl is super-hot novella that is a delight to read from start to finish. Talk about total opposites attracting. Candy is a sweet, bookish, shy, nerdy type of heroine; while Jeremiah is a twofold famous, superstar hottie-stud with women constantly throwing themselves at his feet. Whereas, their career paths kept them separate for ten years, fate still manages to give them a second chance at acknowledging their true feelings for one another. And let me tell you that the chemistry between Jeremiah and Candy is scorching and undeniable. Their sexual interactions are wild, intense and very passionate. All in all, Sugar Girl is a sweet, fantastic read that can be consumed in less than one hour.

Fantastic Read
By LAS Reviewer
Life is full of twists and turns, sometimes you twist and turn the wrong way right up until you bump into the person you started out holding hands with.

Candy Dillon has her head in work. She's busy, busy, busy with her career in engineering. Her childhood sweetheart however, Jeremiah Lange has hit the stratosphere in his career; not only is he a rodeo champion, he's also a Country music star star. Their worlds couldn't be further apart or their lives more different. Candy feels hers is dull and uneventful; if only she could get her adrenaline pumping and grab some fun.

Fate plays her hand and throws Candy and Jeremiah into the same bar one night. Before she knows it, Candy is telling her old friend about her frustration It's all right for him, he's seen the world, experienced the highs, but for her, not so much, not at all in fact.

Before she knows it Jeremiah is flying through the air with her on a bungee jump and they're making out on a Ferris wheel - yes the sparks from years ago are still there. But after a night of serious hotness, where all her dreams come true, will they still have something to work with in the morning?

I have read Ms Austin's books before, she's a go-to-author for me as she never disappoints. Sugar Girl is no exception. It's a hot, sexy read with characters who connect with each other and the reader. There is a nice build up to the steamy action, I really enjoyed the fact that Jeremiah was a super-star yet it didn't take over the story.

Candy was feisty and sweet, I could see why Jeremiah liked her so much. The sex scenes are intense and emotional, the writing flows and heats up the page. All in all a great short read and a wonderful addition to the Naughty Sleepover series. I recommend it if you like m/f romance with some seriously steamy action.

A Fantastic book for all ages
By Darleen Thompson
My children are adults now- with children of their own. And all 4 of my grandchildren (from both my son & daughter's families) are being home schooled-- even though my children were not. I found this book very helpful both for myself- presently and for "looking back" from today's point in time. The author had many good/wise suggestions for approaching family interactions.

Unlike the generations of coaches that have gone before them, today's coaches are expected not only to teach motor skills to young athletes but to do so in an environment that is conducive to the ethical, emotional, social and physical well-being of each one of them. Each of the 15 chapters of this book presents, and then systematically debunks, the most pervasive, persistent and potentially harmful myths in coaching, including such chestnuts as "play by my rules," "winning is the ultimate goal" and "there's no I in 'team.'" Although the information in every chapter is based on current scientific evidence (and there are numerous source notes), each is written in the everyday language of coaches and covers topics that are of particular interest to coaches, parents, athletic administrators, recreation programming specialists--and even the occasional fan.

A Must Read for parents & coaches
By MBG
This book is a Must Read if your child or teen is engaged in, or exploring participation in any sport. It is a tremendously helpful guide to the kind of coaching your child should receive, and the skills and maturity level you and the coaches might expect at any given age of the child. The chapter on hazing is especially frightening. Coaching Myths should also be required reading for every coach, whether a professional or volunteer.
It reads almost like a novel, is difficult to put down once started, and is an excellent investment in a young person's safety & enjoyment of sports!

How to harness your ADHD “hunter” strengths to start your own business and prosper in the workplace

• Provides organizational strategies, tips to maintain focus, and tools to set goals, build a business plan, and discover the right project to keep you motivated

• Shares ADHD success stories from Fortune 500 CEOs, inventors, small business owners, and the author’s own experience in launching new businesses

• Explains the positive side of ADHD behavior in the context of creating a business, working within an existing company, and raising children with ADHD

Most people do not “grow out” of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). For many, their ADHD traits have led to difficulties in school, relationships, and work. But for our hunter-gatherer ancestors these characteristics were necessary for survival. Hunters must be easily distractible, constantly scanning their environment, and unafraid of taking risks. When humanity experienced the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, a vastly different type of personality--the methodical “Farmer”--became dominant. Most of our modern world is tailored to this Farmer personality, from 9-to-5 jobs to the structure of public schools, leaving ADHD Hunters feeling like unsuccessful outcasts. However, the Hunter skill set offers many opportunities for success in today’s Farmer society--if you learn how to embrace your ADHD traits instead of fighting against them.

In this step-by-step guide, Thom Hartmann explains the positive side of Hunter behavior. He reveals how Hunters make excellent entrepreneurs, sharing ADHD success stories from Fortune 500 CEOs, inventors, small business owners, and his own hands-on experience in launching new businesses. Drawing on solid scientific and psychological principles, he provides easy-to-follow organizational strategies, tips to maintain focus and create a distraction-free workspace, and tools to set goals, build a business plan, and discover the right business project to keep you motivated. Hartmann shares valuable advice for both the Hunter entrepreneur and the Hunter within an existing company and for curtailing the aggressive side of the Hunter personality in group situations or manager positions.

Revealing the many ADHD opportunities hidden within the challenges of work, relationships, and day-to-day life, Hartmann also includes tips on navigating family relationships and parenting--for most Hunter parents are also raising Hunter children.

Review
“Thom Hartmann’s Adult ADHD is a classic. This book is inspiring, validating, and an extremely practical guide for the entrepreneur with a ‘hunter’s’ mind. Adult ADHD continues to make an important and unique contribution to the field and to adults with ADHD who long to lead a meaningful and satisfying life.” (Sari Solden, MS, LMFT, author of Women with Attention Deficit Disorder and Journeys Through ADDultho)

“Thom Hartmann is one of the most prolific cultural-creatives of our time. In this book he discloses the inner secret of how he uses his own self-diagnosis of Adult ADD, to ‘make the lemonade’ from what otherwise might be considered a disorder. Likewise, he shows how many of the movers and shakers of our world have succeeded the same way he has--by recognizing how their unique ‘hunter’ talents readily lead both to creative opportunities and financial success.” (Stephen Larsen, Ph.D., author of Joseph Campbell: A Fire in the Mind and The Neurofeedback Solution)

“As an empathetic native guide, Hartmann inspires hunters to revel in their evolutionary legacy. He provides empowering strategies for transforming ADHD challenges into tools for prospering in the farmer’s domain. The motivating success stories reveal a multitude of paths to self-acceptance and celebrate the triumph of neurodiversity over conformity.” (Ellen Littman, Ph.D., coauthor of Understanding Girls with ADHD)

“My therapy clients often compare ADHD to a radio that is on scan--they jump from station to station and get a lot of static. This book is like landing on The Thom Hartmann Program on your radio--a rare voice of calm, clarity, and compassion that reminds us our so-called deficits can often reveal our greatest strengths.” (Rabbi Hillel Zeitlin, LCSW-C, director of the Maryland Institute for Ericksonian Hypnosis & Psyc)

About the Author

Chapter 5

Hunters within Someone Else’s Company

The vast majority of ADHD adults I’ve interviewed or talked with over the years have expressed the desire to own their own business, to become an entrepreneur. This is consistent with the Hunter characteristics of resisting authority and structure, independence, and a high level of creativity.

But not everybody’s cut out for, or even wants, to have their own business. Some Hunters prefer the relative security of working in and for an existing enterprise, or must “keep a job” because of specific life situations. Nonetheless, even in the corporate world, there are many entrepreneurial opportunities.

Many companies have the need for this sort of entrepreneurial vision, and it’s even become a business fad to “reinvent the corporation” so everybody in the company feels like an entrepreneur. Unfortunately, many of the people promoting this idea miss the fact that most people don’t want to be entrepreneurs. They’re perfectly content to work a nine-to-five job and leave the risk to others.

But management that understands the Hunter mind-set--and can identify competent Hunters within a company and give them entrepreneurial opportunities--will succeed in improving productivity.

There is a catch, however, that hooks back to the old cliché about always giving authority to match responsibility. Entrepreneurs, even within a larger corporate context, must run their own show. And those companies that have failed in “entrepreneurializing” their employees have done so because they’ve retained the top-down power structure while only giving lip-service to entrepreneurship within the organization.

The two other most common ways for Hunters to be successful in a corporate structure are to take on jobs in high-stimulation or high-creativity occupations.

Sales Positions for ADHD Hunters

Sales is probably the most common field in the corporate world where we find a high percentage of Hunters. They’re drawn to sales: there’s always something new, with ample challenge and risk. Sales requires intrinsic motivation, and a lot of getting out and moving around. To a large extent salespeople can control their own time, and--it’s a hunt!

The place where ADHD salespeople often fall down, however, is in the follow-through. Numerous excellent books have been written about how to sell. The technologies of prospecting, presenting the product or service, closing the sale, and follow-through are well-known to most people in sales.

But it’s that follow-through after the sale is made, from the filling out of forms to the building of long-term relationships, where most salespeople find their greatest challenge. It’s just not in the nature of the Hunter to skin the bear. That’s the job for the Farmer-types who stay back in the village and attend to the details of chopping wood, carrying water, and preparing the meals.

Most sales books don’t start out with an understanding of the intrinsic nature of Hunters, they simply offer advice about the importance of follow-through. Knowing, however, that this is actually painful work for Hunters, here’s a solution: team up with a Farmer.

Many companies now are finding that a Hunter-Farmer team is the most effective way to sell products or services. The Hunter is responsible for making the calls, doing the presentations, and making the sale. The Farmer organizes the lists of people to cold-call, writes the follow-up letters, and sets up subsequent appointments, and then forges the longterm relationship with the customer when they finally buy. The Farmer is responsible for keeping the Hunter on-task, forcing a daily meeting and evaluating things on a regular basis. The Hunter is responsible for keeping things rolling, maintaining the enthusiasm of the Farmer, getting things started in the company and then handing them off to others, and getting the customers or prospects excited.

This sort of team works well when both people understand their respective jobs, and when their personalities are carefully chosen and compatible. Two Hunters together will be a frenzied disaster; two Farmers together will make few sales. The job descriptions could be called Sales and Sales Support, although a whole range of other descriptions may be appropriate, depending on the industry or profession you’ve chosen.

Sales management is problematic. Over the years, I’ve hired dozens of salespeople. Most all were Hunters, ideally suited to the hunt of sales, but poorly suited to the Farmer job of management. Yet many, perhaps most, have told me at one time or another that their goal was to end up in sales management.

The problem, of course, is that management of sales is not sales itself. So often in sales-driven companies, however, we see the old Peter Principle at work, where salespeople are promoted to the level of their own incompetence: sales management. Then, when they fail at sales management because the skills necessary to be a good manager aren’t built into their personality, they crash and burn, feeling wretched, becoming intolerable, or even losing their jobs.

Management requires attention to detail, patience, never-ending persistence, and a tolerance for boring and repetitive tasks such as planning and budgeting that would drive a Hunter to drink. It’s unfortunate that in our business culture the most common way to reach higher income and status levels is to move “up” into management. The Army has recognized that some people are very good at doing a particular job, but not necessarily suited for, or interested in, management. To provide these people with an upward career path, they’ve developed the rank of “warrant officer,” which usually doesn’t involve any sort of command or administration, but still lets people move up in rank and pay. Successful companies recognize this and provide advancement paths that people can brag to their relatives about, without taking the person out of the field where he or she performs so well. These include opportunities for increases in pay as well as new job titles that may have words like “manager,” “executive,” or “supervisor” in them but don’t require the person to manage other people or handle details outside of their area.

Not So New
By Hornbeam
I've loved Thom Hartmann's books about ADHD, but the ones I've read are 15-20 years old. I was delighted to see that he had written a new one! Just to be sure it was really new, before ordering it I looked on Amazon's list of specifics about the book. Sure enough it said 2016. What I missed was that it was a third edition. When the book arrived, I saw that the title page states it was originally published in 1994, published under a new copyright in 2002, and now under a new copyright in 2016. Now that I have begun to read it, I'm finding that there is a small amount of new information about the DSM-V in the first chapter. As far as I can tell, the rest of the book is probably original. I don't see any references in the bibliography newer than the 1990's and some are from the 1970s and 1980s. This doesn't mean the information is not useful. It's just that I've read about his hunter/farmer theory elsewhere and thought I would be reading an updated presentation. I would appreciate it if Amazon would make it clear when a "new" book is really an old book in a new outer shell.
