Past Perfect

One of several books written in anticipation of the millennium, "Mapping Time: The Calendar and Its History" by E. G. Richards suffers from an especially heavy burden of typographical errors. As can be seen on the author's own web page, the address of which also is incorrect, there are hundreds of errors, some of which affect the accuracy of the account. For example, on page 208, January 1 came to mark the beginning of the Roman civil year in 153 BC, not 158 BC, and was in response to the Second Celtiberian War in Spain. Rather than wait until the middle of March for consuls to assume office, the new year was moved to the first of January so the Roman commander could depart with his legions that much sooner. It is a pity that so many errors compromise an otherwise informative history. Until they can be corrected, a better introduction to the calendar is "The Oxford Companion to the Year."

Interesting but flawed

Very interesting history of the major calendar systems used around the world, both in the present day and in the past. It also gets into the mathematics of how to convert between calendar systems, including algorithms suitable for computer programming. Unfortunately, there are numerous typographical errors in the narrative and in the algorithms! The word "temperature" where the author clearly meant "temperate", substitution of "*" for "-" in a formula, etc. So far, I have been able to correct the formula for computing the day of the week and the formula for computing the date of Easter. I'm not looking forward to tackling the other algorithms. Did anyone proofread this before it was printed? Maybe the publisher could put up an errata sheet on their web site.
Good for the history, but be prepared to do some algebra if you want to use the algorithms.

Erudite But Fun

This is a nice examination of the different calendars and methods of mapping time that humans have employed over the centuries. On the surface it has the air of a dusty reference book, but inside the author is often witty and amusing as he covers the histories and backgrounds of different dating systems. I'm especially impressed by his inclusion of the different algorithms used to calculate dates, of Easter for example, which are marvelously complex. Most readers will never have occasion to use these algorithms, but its nice to know they're there. I also appreciated the charts and the glossary of the more obscure calendrical terms.

Great Book!

Does the job

I purchased this as a required textbook for a Strategic Marketing course. In that regards it's perfect in that I have assigned readings from it, each week. It is not at all inspiring, dry in places, and some of the examples could be updated. For instance, their example regarding Apple is a great description of the company's brand associations and positioning of 10 years ago (the book still refers to them as Apple Computer) and makes no mention of any of the brand development that firm has undergone since. That said, it get's the concepts across, but I think if it hadn't been written a as a college textbook (in accocordance with a textbook publisher's business model) the information could have been transferred more effectively and inspiringly - in probably half to two thirds of the pages. I think the idea is if it weighs more, it must be worth more.

As I said, it does the job. The writing is easy to understand. I'm learning things from it. I will not be keeping it past the end of semester.

Through Amazon, I purchased it for half the price it was selling for at the University Co-op.

Not for the serious student

If you are serious in your exploration of Islam, this book will not be very useful. Although the idea of giving an explanation of the religious symbols found in islamic art and other religious manifestations is quite good, the author has not bothered to state such basic things as her sources or even a simple bibliography. Of course, there are no notes either. It is impossible to go on reading from here, and you will never learn from where did the author gather her knowledge. There is another important flaw: the strong bias in favour of Islam sometimes is so apologetic as to read as a justification, and I really don't think the religion of Islam has anything to apologize for (although I cannot say the same of some muslims), so I find this quite unnecessary and cumbersome.

In spite of all this, my review is a three stars because the book does, at least, give the names and description of many important artistic symbols, and it also gives the popular or folk (I think this is so, since the sources are not quoted) meanings attached to them.

The Dawn Gives Way to Morning Splendor

My mom bought me this book of Proverbs when I was 12. I still have it. It is my favorite translation of this particular Bible book. I also have the full Living Translation bible, which I read cover-to-cover before the NLT existed. I know the controversies and debates regarding this translation and the "one author/translator" issue as well as the "paraphrase" issue. If Eugene Peterson can have a current and accepted translation/paraphrase, why not Ken Taylor?

The poetry of the Proverbs (as well as the Psalms) really comes across in the modern English with this translation. Some of the heavy hitting impact of the KJV or NASB may be lost, but the beauty of the words comes across more clearly, perhaps because it is simply more readable. For example, just this one pair of verses, Proverbs 4:18-19, "But the good man walks along in the ever-brightening light of God's favor; the dawn gives way to morning splendor, while the evil man gropes and stumbles in the dark" is unmatched in any other version, including the NLT. These and many other verses have stuck with me over nearly four decades of life.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you are the kind who subscribes to the idea of reading a chapter of Proverbs for each day of the month. Enjoy!

This is a good pocket size edition of the book of Proverbs from the Bible. The only downside is that it is the Living Bible and not the the New Living Translation.

Sorry there are not many of these available. It is one of the best booklets to use to go through Proverbs, especially for a preteen or young man.
