State of Exception, by Giorgio Agamben

Two months after the attacks of 9/11, the Bush administration, in the midst of what it perceived to be a state of emergency, authorized the indefinite detention of noncitizens suspected of terrorist activities and their subsequent trials by a military commission. Here, distinguished Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben uses such circumstances to argue that this unusual extension of power, or "state of exception," has historically been an underexamined and powerful strategy that has the potential to transform democracies into totalitarian states.

The sequel to Agamben's Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life, State of Exception is the first book to theorize the state of exception in historical and philosophical context. In Agamben's view, the majority of legal scholars and policymakers in Europe as well as the United States have wrongly rejected the necessity of such a theory, claiming instead that the state of exception is a pragmatic question. Agamben argues here that the state of exception, which was meant to be a provisional measure, became in the course of the twentieth century a normal paradigm of government. Writing nothing less than the history of the state of exception in its various national contexts throughout Western Europe and the United States, Agamben uses the work of Carl Schmitt as a foil for his reflections as well as that of Derrida, Benjamin, and Arendt.

In this highly topical book, Agamben ultimately arrives at original ideas about the future of democracy and casts a new light on the hidden relationship that ties law to violence.

Review
"When a conservative member of the U.S. Congress recently designated the Guantanamo prisoners as 'those who were missed by the bombs' and thus forfeited their right to live, he almost literally evoked Agamben's notion of homo sacer, a man reduced to bare life no longer covered by any legal or civil rights. What you hold in your hands is simply the book for all those who do not see in 9/11 a mere pretext for patriotic mobilization, but an impetus for a deeper reflection on where we stand today with regard to the very fundamentals of our civilization." (Slavoj Zizek Slavoj Zizek, author of Iraq: The Borrowed Kettle 2004-08-06)

"State of Exception is a timely and compelling inquiry into the capacity of state power to withdraw the guarantees of legal protection and entitlement, at once abandoning its subjects to the violent whims of law and intensifying state power. Not to be conceived as merely occasional and conditional, invocations of a state of exception have come to constitute the basis of modern state power. Agamben deftly considers the historical and philosophical implications of this power, offering a brilliant consideration of 'life' and its tense relation to normativity. This is an erudite and provocative book that calls for us to 'stop the machine' and break the violent hold that law lays upon life."

(Judith Butler Judith Butler, author of Precarious Life: Powers of Violence and Mourning 2004-08-06)

"For Agamben, fingerprinting is not just a matter of civil liberties: it is symptomatic of an alarming shift in political geography. We have moved from Athens to Auschwitz: the West's political model is now the concentration camp rather than the city state; we are no longer citizens but detainees, distinguishable from the inmates of Guantanamo not by any difference in legal status, but only by the fact that we have not yet had the misfortune to be incarcerated--or unexpectedly executed by a missile from an unmanned aircraft. . . . But although his recent examples come from the war on terror, the political development they represent is not, according to Agamben, peculiar to the United States under the Bush presidency. It is part of a wider range in governance in which the rule of law is routinely displaced by the state of exception, or emergency, and people are increasingly subject to extra-judicial state violence." (Malcolm Bull London Review of Books 2004-12-16)

"State of Exception is an impressive and disquieting meditation on the state of the democratic institutions by which political power is organised in the West. Written in a simple and lucid language, this is an erudite, meticulous, and precise examination of the long and complex history of the ideological framework underpinning the present obsession with the state of exception as the 'new form-of-state' as it obtains at least in the USA and UK." (Tony Simoes da Silva International Journal of Baudrillard Studies 2005-07-01)

"This book will likely be every bit as influential as [Agamben's] previous texts. . . . An indispensable read for geographers and others interested in the spatiality of law and sovereign power." (Mathew Coleman Environment and Planning)

"The impact of Agamben's thought since the publication of the first volume of Homo Sacer . . . has been immense not merely in the field of continental philosophy but also in political and legal theory, sociology, and in literary and cultural studies." (M. Canstantinou and M. Margaroni Continental Philosophy)

"In Agamben's work, one meets a vision that looks deeply into the well of human experience, and perceives there a turbulent and powerful interplay of political and social forces, all serving to shape and constitute--not only the social order and individual suhbjectivity--but also 'life' at its most basic level." (Radical Philosophy Review)

"A worthwhile addition to the burgeoning literature on mass violence." (Kenneth Hemmerechts H-Net)

A Cautionary Book for the War on Terrorism
By The Peripatetic Reader
The State has employed from time to time a political action by declaring an emergency and suspending the laws and/or Constitutions of the country. This state of emergency is what Agamben calls the “State of Exception.” Readers will be familiar with declaring a state of emergency more from the results of a natural disaster, such as a catastrophic forest fire, or, as readers from California are most familiar with now, a prolonged drought.

This is not the emergency Agamben means. He is mainly concerned with states of emergency precipitated from social or political events. For instance, Napoleon declaring a state of siege due to the Reign of Terror. More modernly, Agamben discusses the state of exception with regards to the current War on Terror.

Agamben examines the historical record and customs of the European countries with regard to these emergency measures. The state of exception has different names in different countries.

In Germany it was Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, employed by Hitler to gain absolute power.

In Switzerland it was a Constitutional provision giving the federal government power to take all measures to “guarantee security.”

In Italy it was a provision of emergency executive decrees.

In France it was the suspension of rights whenever there was a “state of siege.”

In England, it was the institution of martial law.

Here in the United States it is Article I of the United States Constitutional which provides for the suspension of habeas corpus in times of insurrection. This provision has morphed, recently, into the “War on Terrorism;” the suspension of all rights, not simply to habeas corpus, to persons providing “material support” to terrorists; and other features not mentioned by Agamben, such as the concept of the “unitary executive,” granting near dictatorial power to the Executive; the declaration of “permanent war” — a de facto state of exception — on terrorism; and the term “War on Terrorism” itself. The list could go on and on.

Agamben sees many dangers with these sovereign powers. One, his historical analysis demonstrates that once granted, these powers are rarely withdrawn voluntarily. Two, if they are withdrawn, the reason is usually due to factors other than the reason these emergency powers were invoked, such as in the complete breakdown of the governmental apparatus, whether through war, Nazi Germany being an extreme example, or otherwise. Three, these sovereign powers are detrimental, if not positively antithetical, to the concept of a functioning democracy. And, four, while the historical record demonstrates these emergency powers were infrequently invoked, more contemporaneously they are the rule rather than the exception, whether invoked by traditional democratic or totalitarian States.

While Agamben does not employ this terminology, the State of Exception is a cancer to democratic institutions. Again, this is certainly true of Germany, when, as Agamben reminds us, Hitler’s actions after he obtained power, while horrific, were all “legal,” and within the bounds of his legal emergency powers.

Agamben’s book, then, is a word of caution. It is Agamben’s way of warning that a state of exception, once invoked, is a slippery slope, having its own costs to democracy.

Extraordinary
By Scooter
Agamben's State of Exception is an extraordinary work in several ways. It is superbly written, which is critical to the task of conveying such a complex subject. Agamben weaves his topic of 'exception' through philosophical, legal and historical frameworks, and succeeds in demonstrating how the topic must be viewed from multiple angles. Yet it is not simply from different 'view points' that Agamben argues; he presents his thesis with an abundance of knowledge - indeed erudition. This work is clearly of contemporary relevance, and Agamben amply demonstrates this. Yet he instructs the reader on how deeply historical and increasingly diffuse the topic is, extending to the political theory of Roman and Greek thinkers, and tracing the continuity of thought to present thinkers, and to events that bring the topic right into the living rooms of us all.

The Philosophers: Their Lives and the Nature of their Thought, by Ben-Ami Scharfstein

This highly readable volume offers a broad introduction to modern philosophy and philosophers. Ben-Ami Scharfstein contends that personal experience, especially that of childhood, affects philosophers' sense of reality and hence the content of their philosophies. He bases his argument on biographical studies of twenty great philosophers, beginning with Descartes and ending with Wittgenstein and Sartre. Taken together, these studies provide the beginnings of a psychological history of the philosophy of the period.
Scharfstein first focuses on the philosophers' efforts to arrive at the objective truth and to persuade themselves and others of its existence. He then explores truth and relevance, both proposing the broadening of the traditional philosophical conception of relevance and considering philosophers' need to create something that belongs to and transcends them as individuals.

Revisiting My Own Book
By B. Scharfstein
It may have been only an odd mistake that led Amazon to invite me to review my own book, which was published 26 years ago, in 1980. Because I am often critical of my books, I am somewhat surprised by how much I continue to take pleasure in this one. I value it as a still uniquely detailed, sober, and yet imaginative argument meant to persuade--really persuade--philosophers and lovers of philosophy that it is unreasonable to interpret philosopohical views without considering the lives and emotions of the philosophers who created them. Most philosophers have had a stubborn but understandable prejudice against such an attempt, which they label, as if it were a fallacy, "psychologism." But a comparison of their lives and fortunes and misfortunes with their abstract thought shows how misled these philosophers have been. As I write toward the end of the book, "Neither art, philosophy, nor science alone is adequate to understand or express human experience. Life would be more intellectually rewarding if artists and scientists were were more effectively interested in philosophy, and philosophers more effectively in art and science."

Although excellent biographies of individual philosophers were published later than The Philosophers, the work I did on it was thoroughgoing,so it has not aged. And since I followed no current intellectual fashion, it has not gone out of fashion. I believe that the pleasure I took in writing my book is still infectious, and the care with which I developed my themes is still yields illuminatiion. Not without pride, I award my book the five stars I am sure is its due.

A psychological review of the great philosophers
By D. Roberts
While psycho-analyses of people is something I generally shy away from, Ben-Ami Sharfstein has completed a fascinating string of case-studies. What makes it interesting is that the "subjects" are the greatest philosophers who have ever lived.

Sharfstein begins with some general observations about the psychological welfare of philosophers in general. He then goes on to discuss some patterns that he finds in the different personas. He also discusses the nature of truth and methods of persuasion. This covers the first 123 pages.

After this elongated introduction, the author goes into each of the major modern philosophers in-turn, starting with Rene Descartes. Some of his favorites (Kant, Nietzsche) get 20+ pages devoted to them, while most of the personages get around 10 pages on their biography.

Nietzsche once said that one can tell a lot about the philosophy by the life of the philosopher. Scharfstein takes this to heart and briefly examines aspects of each individual's philosophy via the lens of their lives. He examines different aspects such as their childhoods (and the relationship they had w/their parents), their relationships with women as well as major life / traumatic events. All factor in to influencing how a philosopher thinks.

If you want a good book that deals with the psychological factors of philsophers, this is a great place to start. Sharfstein does not over-play his hand and I found his commentary to be insightful and reasonable. This is a very well thought-out book.

The life helps you understand the work
By Shalom Freedman
I read this book in the language it was first published in, Hebrew. I found it remarkable . It showed in a deeper way than any other research I had seen the connection between the lives of the philosophers and their thought.

I will give just one telling example. Scharfstein discovered that most of the great philosophers had lost at least one parent at a very early age. The need to think deeply about the world, to understand the meaning of it all, relates certainly to that early and great loss.

This work is illuminating throughout and recommended to any real lover of philosophy, of trying to understand the world.

The Sweet Science, by A. J. Liebling

This collection of A. J. Liebling's classic New Yorker pieces on the "sweet science of bruising" brings vividly to life the boxing world as it once was. It depicts the great events of boxing's American heyday: Sugar Ray Robinson's dramatic comeback, Rocky Marciano's rise to prominence, Joe Louis's unfortunate decline. Liebling never fails to find the human story behind the fight, and he evokes the atmosphere in the arena as distinctly as he does the goings-on in the ring--a combination that prompted Sports Illustrated to name The Sweet Science the best American sports book of all time.

From AudioFile
Grover Gardner is the perfect narrator for this collection of Lieblings New Yorker pieces about boxing, written in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Featured are Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sandy Sadler, Archie Moore, Rocky Marciano, Jersey Joe Walcott--all fighters of Americas golden age of pre-television boxing. No one else has ever written so well about this sport. Gardner captures the voices of know-it-all New York fight fans and the denizens of the Neutral Corner, a New York City bar owned, tended, and patronized by fighters and their retinue. Gardners rendition of Tommy Farr, the Welsh heavyweight, alone is worth the purchase price. Those who love boxing, and even those who dont, will enjoy the Liebling-Gardner team. If you enjoys details of the history of boxing and the back door dealings then this is a great spot to start......
"Joe" was a boxing writer for many newspapers from the 20's and 30"s. He was there when the Original Sugar Ray was pounding his way to the top along with Joe Lewis and Rocky Marciano......and many of the old Champions who got paid little but loved the sport.......

The many secrets of the "Sweet Science" are revealed is this great book,
It contains many details so has to be read carefully to savor the special contents of his labors and those of the fighters from this generation...... It's a piece of American History that thankfully will not be forgotten because of his writing......

a terrific read
By artanis65
When I first read this collection of essays about boxing, I thought I noticed a certain sameness about them. Most of the essays follow a pattern - Liebling visits the boxers while they're training, he goes to the bout and describes the fight in some detail, then leaves for home, or often for a bar and reflects on the fight. But the book is so good that immediately after finishing, I felt compelled to read it for a second time, and I noticed that each essay has its own theme, a slightly different and interesting take on the sport. Liebling was an expert on boxing history, and when he wrote these essays had been attending bouts for over thirty years. Often the essays feature names still familiar today - Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano. Liebling is erudite and opinionated. He sympathises with the older boxers, and prefers guile to raw punching power. He also dislikes television and cultivates a humourous disdain for fans who go to boxing matches only to be seen. He's the sort of fellow you would like to drink with in a bar because he's utterly fascinating.

The whimsical quality of some of his writing is apparent in the following excerpt, when he's describing how putting sparring partners on the preliminary card makes for bad fights: "Sparring partners are endowed with habitual consideration and forbearance, and they find it hard to change character. A kind of guild fellowship holds them together, and they pepper each other's elbows with merry abandon, grunting with pleasure like hippopotamuses in a beer vat." That's great writing.

A final note; this book is a window into an different world, the age just before television took hold, when many people still took their amusement outside their homes. Unfortunately, that world is gone, but you can explore it in this wonderful book.

Boxing as culture
By mojo_navigator
When asked which is the best book on boxing ever written, anyone with any inclination towards the literary side of The Manly Art will instinctively site Liebling's classic collection of essays written in the early '50s collected in this volume. On the evidence here, I cannot dispute the consensus. Liebling gives you not a history or a list of profiles of boxers but an entire world and a culture. He captures the feel of going to a boxing match in the early '50s, the crowds, the managers, the trainers and assorted characters. The best thing you can say about a piece of literature is that it places you in the action, you can physically feel that you are there and present. I have read no other book on Boxing that accurately captures this the way Liebling does in The Sweet Science. He's also an accomplished and erudite writer, a highly cultured man who brings that cultural sensitvity to something often considered, by those ignorant of these things, to be base and low-brow.

The fighters themselves - Marciano, Moore, Sadler, Robinson, Patterson, Farr - come across less as legends and more as contemporary sportsmen. It seems incredible to me that once upon a time you could just buy a ticket and stroll into the Marciano-Moore fight! For me, that fight and many others was the stuff of mythology and yet Liebling succeeds in making it real and tangible.

Final note: anyone who after reading this feels an uncontrollable lust to acquire Pierce Egan's Boxiana volumes will be enthralled to know that there is a company in Canada, Nicol Island Publishing, who have published at least three of the total of five volumes. Unfortunately, Amazon does not seem to sell any of them.

Tom Stoppard: A Life, by Ira Nadel

Tom Stoppard is, arguably, the greatest living English playwright. His work, from the early Jumpers to the film Shakespeare in Love to the current Invention of Love has changed the landscape of drama. Witty, erudite, passionate, abstract, clever, his works are like no one else's. Who is Tom Stoppard-the Czech-born son of Jews who became the singularly English man of letters? In this vibrant, critical portrait, Ira Nadel weaves life and works into a fascinating chronicle of Stoppard's world on English and American stages. Peopled with such characters as Diana Rigg, John Wood, and Billy Crudup, the book untangles Stoppard's genius against the backdrop of Broadway and London's West End.

From Library Journal
Tom Stoppard is perhaps our greatest living playwright, with over 25 plays produced since 1965 and a cornucopia of honors, including numerous Tony awards, an Oscar for the screenplay of Shakespeare in Love, and a knighthood. Yet Stoppard is and always has been a hard man to pin down, and noted critic and academic Nadel freely admits that "Stoppard in many ways resists biography." Fortunately, that does not keep him from trying and, 600-plus pages later, largely succeeding. Canadian critic/biographer Nadel (Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen) spends considerable time wending his way through the Stoppard chronology, dwelling on the linguistically lush plays like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Jumpers, Travesties, The Real Thing, and Arcadia, all of which are uniquely complex, comedic, and intellectual. This thorough and fresh text updates and surpasses Michael Billington's 1987 Stoppard the Playwright. The best and most complete Stoppard biography available, this is a no-brainer acquisition decision for all collections. Barry X. Miller, Austin P.L., TX

Unauthorized Bio
By Antoinette Constable
Nadel has clearly done his homework in his reading about the theatre and plays generally. But he also unfortunately, and probably in order to fill in many gaps, provides us with far too many of unnecessary details-- such as the street number of the house where Stoppard's father was born, but little valid information about Tom Stoppard as an an author,-- though we're given much useless information about other characters- or the very plays he's supposed to explore for and with us. If you haven't read all the plays, you will find the book heavy, literally and figuratively.

Praise, when given, often seems grudging-- we are told, in the acknowlegments, that the playright was generous, as told Nadel by Stoppard's sister. But that generosity isn't shown in the body of the biography , though we're given many petty details, such as Stoppard being often late or disorganized.
In writing his unauthorized bio,Nadel,by definition, had to leave out much: what he was unaware of, what he couldn't explore, and what he didn't understand. He appears unaware of Stoppard's aim of creating a theater of ideas as more than a theater of action.
At over 500 pages, this biography is too long and repetitive. (And surely, somewhere, there could have been traces of humor, considering Nadel was writing about a most witty author...)
Being left with many unanswered questions, in spite of its topic, I found this book disappointing.

An exemplary biography
By John Francis
This is the fullest, most up-to-date, and most informative book yet on Tom Stoppard's life and career, and also a helpful vade mecum to his works, unpacking their sources in Stoppard's reading and his own life. One reviewer here finds the amount of detail to be a disadvantage; I don't understand this objection, and think it's a clear advantage. After all, biographies aren't read for what they leave out! Stoppard has been notoriously elusive, even evasive, but Ira Nadel has answered a great many questions I had about his life, and not a few that I hadn't thought to ask. Essential reading for anyone seriously interested in the playwright.

Best Textbook I've ever bought
By Sorcha Hartman
I was actually privileged enough to take the course with Professor Coppock, and it has been by far and away the best course I have ever taken at UVA. The book is written in a wonderfully personable way, and concepts are broken down fantastically. I would even go as far to say that if you're taking ANY intro macro class, this is the textbook to buy. If you're taking Coppock's class, his course follows the textbook almost exactly, but the textbook will further explain and give additional examples he doesn't have time to cover in class. The chapters are short and to the point, and the questions at the end are relevant and reinforce the information presented.
