not worth the money...

This book isn't even a re-hash of the venerable Wrox Press book on Professional MFC with Visual C++ 6. 14 years later, you would expect a new book to deal heavily with Visual Studio 2010's version of MFC, C++ and the STL. But NO! This book chose to use Visual C++ 6.0 (and mention it heavily...), which is no longer supported by Microsoft, isn't C++ standards compliant (it PREDATED the C++ standard!), and doesn't use a modern version of MFC or the STL.
So, folks, save your money! The book that you really want doesn't exist yet. Nothing to see here. Move along...
What we (the community) really needs is an updated version similar to the Wrox Press 'Professional MFC with Visual C++ 6.0'. I wonder when the publishers will figure that out and produce the book that's needed, rather than useless re-treads like this?

Is this a great country or what?

I would love to buy a new mfc book that takes me along for a reasonably accomplished desktop application. I downloaded the code and ran the pre-compiled executable of the finished project and I was very disappointed to find in the read-me file that visual studio 6 was used to develop this application. A lot has happened since 1989 when that old version of visual studio came out. I got over thirty errors and god knows how many warnings when I tried to build the solution using visual studio 2010 professional. I am sure the source code could be redacted to run on the new visual studio compilers but it makes me wonder why someone would publish a computer book in 2012 using an IDE that old and out of date. Microsoft still supports MFC so there is no real reason to stick with the old compiler. A recompile would freshen up the user interface too. Pass on this book until the code is updated because the whole point of this book is lost if the project does not compile.
I have contacted the publisher and I will update this review if they respond with an acceptable solution.

I wrote the publisher and got a prompt reply from a Linda Jones, who sent my concerns to Randi Cohen, the editor of this book. Ms Cohen contacted the authors who made changes to the code and posted separate downloads for Visual Studio 6 and Visual Studio 2010. I have built all of the solutions using visual Studio 2010 with no errors for debug and release. Only one warning for some macro not defined. You must have the mfc libraries included in your path of course. I am shocked that the system worked to be frank. I have not had time to dig into the book because my plan regarding computer books is to download the code first before I spend my cash. Excuse me, I have to buy a lottery ticket.

A nice big tutorial! :)

I am only about a third of the way through the book, but I'm already excited to write a review for this book because the subject matter is really helpful to an amateur like me! I'm glad to finally find a nice big tutorial to teach myself something about software development without looking silly.
What I really like about the book is, the authors did a good job of explaining the software development step-by-step to build an app, it's like they are right next to you explaining stuff to you one-to-one. Each chapter has an introductory section so that you'll get an overview picture of where you are headed, and then all the steps to build the component into the software. And at the end of each chapter, there is a nice summary and a set of references to get you further if you need to.
If you want to build something from scratch and boost your skill-set then this is definitely the tutorial that will help you through it: source code and explanations that actually works!
