Effective explanation
By rpv
If you are looking for an effective way to manage Unix-based file servers in a Windows environment, the best solution is to use Samba, which is an open source project. If you are an experienced Unix administrator, you can probably learn Samba and its intricacies by poring through the resources that come with Samba, as well as those found on the Web. This book fills a void, and goes into great detail on some foundations, basic and advanced operations, and many tips and tricks. The book can be read by system administrators who maintain a myriad of machines with Unix-based file servers, as well as by Windows and other desktop users. The book will also be of interest to open source enthusiasts interested in learning Samba for educational purposes.
It is ideal if you have a couple of machines handy (in particular, a Windows machine and a Linux machine) to try the various things that are mentioned in the book. Most system administrator tasks are best explained and learned using a real system. The book is divided into five parts, each of which is divided into several chapters. The chapters do not need to be read in sequence. For example, I would recommend reading Part 4 earlier, as it outlines many tips and tricks; I found it to be one of the most useful parts of the book.
Part 1 introduces Samba and answers why Samba is needed in the first place. If you are familiar with Windows file system formats and are an expert Microsoft Windows administrator, you can ignore this part. Part 2 is the meat of the book, and gives the details of obtaining, installing, and running Samba; its configuration parameters; configuring file and printer shares; and managing Samba accounts. The author provides minute details, and one can lose focus in the narrations. Therefore, I recommend doing a first-level reading of sections that are of interest to you. You can then go back through the text to get more details on references and other topics of interest. One thing to note is that Samba is an open source project, and new revisions within the major 3.0 version are bound to appear frequently. Therefore, some behavior in your system may be different from the one described in the book. In such a case, consult the online references for a better understanding.
I suggest readers go through Part 4 and the appendix before reading Part 3. Part 4 offers a more hands-on practical discussion, and I found it to be the best way to learn and configure Samba easily. It also discusses using Samba scripts, troubleshooting Samba, using clients to interact with the Samba server, and Samba backups. For this part, having two machines running to try the commands and actions was helpful. This will make learning the material much easier. The appendix summarizes the configuration options and use of the popular Samba command net. Part 3 deals with advanced Samba operations, such as configuring a master browser, NetBIOS name server, and domain controller; security aspects; and Samba interaction with other protocols.
Overall, I would recommend the book, but be forewarned: a Unix system is necessary if you want to try various Samba features while reading it. The book would be difficult to follow without this hands-on experience.

A Must-Have for Samba Administrators
By J. P. Mens
Roderick W. Smith is the author of several books on Linux/Unix computing, including Apress' very good offering aptly titled The Definitive Guide to Samba 3.
On six hundred pages, the author explains just about everything there is to know about SMB and CIFS, with a focus on the free Samba implementation. That is the first part of the book.
The second part of the book introduces Samba configuration as well as configuring file and printer shares and managing Samba accounts. This is then followed by more advanced topics such as the configuration of a master browser and a domain controller. The chapters on Securing Samba and that on Samba's Interactions with other protocols are worth the price of the book by themselves.
Part four is dedicated to a huge number of Samba Tips & Tricks which include the migration of a Windows domain to Samba and backups, as well as a chapter on troubleshooting.
Once again, and as usual, I missed an in-depth discussion of integrating Samba with LDAP. The author rightly points out that it is a difficult proposition, and he unfortunately only skims over the LDAP-related parameters of Samba.
All in all, this is an excellent book for any systems administrator who is either undertaking the installation of Samba or who wants to know more about its innards.

Emphasis on new features
By W Boudville
A few years ago, Samba came on the scene as an effective and cheap [free!] way to get unix and Microsoft Windows machines on a common network to do file sharing. Very popular. In late 2003, the latest major revision was released, Samba 3. Now this text gives an independent and indepth evaluation of all its features.
My impression from this book is that if you're already using Samba 2 and just upgrade to 3, you can essentially do all your existing procedures unchanged. Apart from bug fixes, of course, Samba 3 is, to good approximation, a superset of Samba 2. Makes the transition easier. This does mean that if you are using Samba 2, and have a text for it, and you upgrade, you may not really need this book.
Ah, but when it comes to specifically new features, then the book shines. Smith goes into sometimes excrutiating details about items like improved Unicode handling and Active Directory integration. He points out the useful features; the details of which can be nontrivial, and which form the key sections of the narrative.
All this is pitched to someone [you] that he assumes to be a unix sysadmin who has at least several months experience. Don't be intimidated by the length of the text. Sections are usable on an as-needed basis. In other words, you don't have to plough through all or even most of it, before you can start doing useful activities with Samba 3.
