Nonequilibrium Many-Body Theory of Quantum Systems: A Modern Introduction, by Gianluca Stefanucci, Robert van Leeuwen

The Green's function method is one of the most powerful and versatile formalisms in physics, and its nonequilibrium version has proved invaluable in many research fields. This book provides a unique, self-contained introduction to nonequilibrium many-body theory. Starting with basic quantum mechanics, the authors introduce the equilibrium and nonequilibrium Green's function formalisms within a unified framework called the contour formalism. The physical content of the contour Green's functions and the diagrammatic expansions are explained with a focus on the time-dependent aspect. Every result is derived step-by-step, critically discussed and then applied to different physical systems, ranging from molecules and nanostructures to metals and insulators. With an abundance of illustrative examples, this accessible book is ideal for graduate students and researchers who are interested in excited state properties of matter and nonequilibrium physics.

Actually useful textbook to beginners, a rare find!
By Brian
This book's intro states that it tries to be pedagogical and be an introduction for a novice learner. And they really follow through on it. They always explain their notation and walk through their proofs. As a beginner who has become sick of books that are written more as reminders to those who already know, rather than teaching new knowledge to those who seeing it for the first time. I name it one of the very few textbooks with actual pedagogical value that I've used. A+

Insightful yet pedagogical; idiosyncratic yet clear; a brilliant book by talented researchers
By B. Nartowt
The 5 stars is for all material up to and including chapter 5. (I am not sure how many stars the material beyond this deserves--haven't read it yet).

My test for the goodness of a physics textbook is as follow. Any textbook provides pages of information to its reader. That information is the result of years of researchers grappling with a question. Thus, whenever a textbook presents information, the question that "drove the discovery of the information" can sometimes be lost. Thus, I ascertain a textbook's worth by seeing how easily I (a neophyte to the field, as would be anyone reading a textbook) can "reverse engineer" the above-mentioned question that provided the answer. When reading Jorgen Rammer's textbook (Quantum Field Theory of Non-equilibrium States), the questions I "reverse engineered" turned out to be irrelevant and foolish; worse, the exercises seemed disconnected from the material presented). In contrast, the questions I "reverse engineered" from this textbook by Stefanucci and van Leeuwen were relevant, well-posed, and valuable. Thus, the textbook is extremely suitable for self-study.

This text is highly detail-oriented in guiding its reader through performing the calculations themselves. Most all steps of calculations are shown, with periphery-but-non-obvious steps relegated to footnotes. The exercises are reasonable, yet challenging. I have a vivid picture in my mind of a traditionally challenging and opaque topic. It's very clear that the authors of the text deeply understand the material they are presenting. Their presentation crackles with insight yet is focused on pedagogy; is rife with (the) idiosyncrasy (that accompanies one's deep understanding of a topic) yet is stalwartly clear and well-organized.

Some nice miscellaneous features of this text: (1) an entire chapter devoted to Hamiltonians and the physics "inside" of them, (2) its trick for calculating the sign of a permutation, (3) graphically handling permanents and determinants, (4) its taking on the role of "apologist" for some of the possibly-confusing jargon of field theory (e.g., "...why the name 'random phase' approximation?"), etc.

I'm lucky such a textbook exists: it only came out last April 2013, and is extraordinarily relevant to my field of research. I don't know what I would have done if this text didn't exist (probably stumble around in the dark and need to have my hand held through the course of writing my dissertation).

I will continue to read this, and post my impressions of the material in chapter 6 and beyond.

Thorough and in general pedagogical textbook but ...
By Theoretical Physics
I decided to give five starts to this book basically because of its very broad content. From my viewpoint, the main drawback of this textbook is that some sections are very smooth and flowing and the reader can understand them without difficulty (even the newcomer), but there are other sections (even within the same chapter) that are not smooth at all and sometimes turn confusing (even for readers that are aware of the material!). In those sections the authors usually throw in equations followed by terse explanations (sometimes in the form of footnotes) and the whole presentation doesn't seem concatenated; this happens at those points where the authors try to render something plausible by either invoking material and equations that are several pages behind/ahead of the current reading point or using footnotes, something that I find a little annoying because it interferes with a previously flowing presentation. In other words the authors are not explanatory by the same degree at all points of their presentation (sometimes they explain very well, sometimes they explain more than necessary, and there are several times in which they explain something in a sloppy way!)
