OUTSTANDING RESOURCE!!!!!

I was introduced to this book by a presenter at a NY mathematics conference in the Fall of '06. The presenter came from a district with very little funding and insisted that this book was worth every penny. I immediately ordered it and have been raving about it ever since! Activities are well-designed and easily adapted for various grade-levels. I have squeezed several activities in thus far and they have been very successful. My students LOVE them, and they are an excellent way to reinforce thier math skills. This book is an absolute NECESSITY for any secondary mathematics teacher.

Great book: requires rewrite/revision; excellent for concept

Colloidal Dispersions is an excellent text, both for graduate students and for physicists/physical chemists foraying into the field of colloidal dispersions. The book starts by talking about particle hydrodynamics, then introduces Brownian motion and follows it up with description of different interaction forces experienced by colloidal particles. Thereafter, it discusses the thermodynamics of polymer in solution, how it affects the forces between the particles. In following chapters, it details the electrokinetic phenomena, and the physics of polymer mediated and charged mediated stabilization. The last few chapters return to dynamics again, with a chapter each devoted to sedimentation and rheology!

The book is beautifully written, and most of the material is useful as it is. Since this book was written in 1989, it requires a revision to bring it to the level of current understanding. The whole realm of nanoparticles is based on principles described here, as is the field of colloidal self-assembly. With a revision and few additions here and there, and maybe addition of some references to the work done between 1989-2005, the book can be made into workhouse of all colloidal scientists. I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding the physical behavior of colloids. Coming with a background in Statistical Mechanics would be certainly helpful, and for people with training in Polymer Physics, the book can be understood by drawing analogies with the concepts used there. This is one of the best book in terms of the balance between the use of equations and words used to present physical picture and definitely one everyone in the field must read:) But as I said before, I will be greatly indebted to authors if they bring out a revised edition: I hope they do so soon!!

Good for Grad Students

This book, despite not being updated for about a decade, is still at the top of its class... This book should be on the desk of every scientist who is interested in interparticle forces. This book covers the theory and the development of colloid science from its early days to modern times. It is likely to be useful for theorists who will lean on the math and good references in the book and useful to experimentalists who seek to understand interparticle forces. Most experimentalists will probably also want to buy Jacob Israelachvili's book, which I haven't read much of, but I know Israelachvili is the man behind the surface forces apparatus (SFA), so many who seek to measure the interparticle forces described in WBR's book will want Jacob's book as well.
I am a graduate student at Princeton, home to the authors, and, not surprisingly, this book is a strong reflection of two courses in the chemical engineering department called Colloidal Dispersions I and II. I'm taking the series now, and, if you are in the class, you already know you need the book, and you shouldn't be reading this review.
I'd give the book 5 stars instead of 4, but I feel that it needs to be updated to reflect the increasing use of computer simulations (Note that I am biased, as a computer person) and new developments in colloid science. And lastly, though I feel the book is highly readable, the math is intense, and I suspect there are many scientists and engineers (myself included) who will have wished WBR had skipped fewer steps. Largely though, you can't blame the authors for that. The book would be a million pages long if they didn't skip steps. Try to use the extensive references to fill in the steps in the math if possible.
On a value basis, a 4 star book that costs only 2/3 what you usually pay means you are getting a steal here.

If you are intersted in colloidal forces this is a great text. it does not have a huge breadth of information but it does a very good job of covering what makes colloids stable. it covers DLVO theory solutions in several geometries, taking PB theory pretty much as far as it can go. Well, you can go further, but its pretty good.

About the Author
Neil Hopkinson is a lecturer in the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University, UK. Having obtained his PhD in Rapid Tooling in 1999, Neil began to look into the economic viability of Rapid Manufacturing. Inspired by the findings of this research Neil began to investigate lowcost, high-speed Rapid Manufacturing processes while also focusing his research on material properties in powder-based layer manufacturing processes. To date Neil has secured over £1 million of research funding and published over 40 journal/conference papers; he was also an invited visiting lecturer at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Phill Dickens is Professor of Manufacturing Technology and Director of the Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre at Loughborough University, UK. He is also Associate Dean of Research for the Engineering Faculty. Phill started work in the area of Rapid Prototyping in 1990, working on processes such as 3D Welding and using copper coated SL models as electrodes for EDM. The research work has changed emphasis since then from Rapid Prototyping to Rapid Tooling and is now concentrating on Rapid Manufacturing.

Richard Hague is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Rapid Manufacturing Research Group at Loughborough University, UK. He has been involved with Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Manufacturing (RM) research since 1993, and is now Principal Investigator on several large EPSRC, DTI and EU funded research projects. He was also instrumental in setting up and managing the successful Rapid Manufacturing Consortium that now operates from Loughborough. Richard has many academic publications in the area of Rapid Manufacturing and is referee to several international academic journals and conferences. He also holds a patent that was gained as part of his PhD studies which is licensed to the predominant manufacturer of Rapid Prototyping equipment (3D Systems Inc.).

Why is this unrevised version still in print in the U.S.?

I read this book shortly after the American edition came out in 1995. In 2002, however, Nicholl published a significantly revised version, altering some of his previous speculations and conclusions, particularly on the crucial topic of who may have inspired or engineered Marlowe's murder. The 1995 version, therefore, is to that extent invalid and should be replaced with the extensive 2002 revision. For some reason, only the old version is still available in the U.S. I had to order the revised version from the UK. For that reason I cannot give this book more than three stars, and probably should have given it fewer.

Superbly written and entertaining

Contrary to what one reviewer (if we can use that word, since he or she obviously didn't read the book) says, the mystery of Marlowe's death has not ceased to be fascinating. There are several reasons for this, as Nicholl makes abundantly clear: first, the debt owed to any human being whose death has not been clarified; second, the light this murder throws on the workings of the Elizabethan espionage system, and Marlowe's relation to it; third, the fact that he wasn't just anyone - he was a gifted writer, and we all lost something by his dying so young.
Nicholl's work leaves nothing to be desired: it is at the same time scholarly and awfully entertaining. The man obviously knows his subject. The Marlowe that emerges is not the brilliant if somewhat rebellious youth that we used to think of, but a less likeable, more unsavoury character. But, as Nicholl says somewhere in the book, can we really burden him with the weight of our own expectations? He was a man of his time, and, although we might regret having to put the spy side by side with the playwright, he may not have seen it that way: it was a question of going or not going hungry. I would say that I altogether prefer the fuller picture, even if it's not the most pleasant one.
"The Reckoning" is abundantly researched and very well written, and is one of the few books I have lately read, which I did not want to finish.

Poetry, Espionage and Murder

The death (possible murder) of Christopher Marlowe is one of the most fascinating of all true crimes. Set in Elizabethan London with a cast of characters that include William Shakespeare, "The Reckoning" provides a intriguing explantion for the events of that strange day when after hours of drink and talk, Kit Marlowe ended up dead, stabbed through the eye. The official story: a quarrel over the bill or reckoning. But mix in politics, espionage (Marlowe was a spy), homosexuality and literary genuis and the official story gets shaken to its tidy core. This is a very fine work, thoughtful, well-researched and crisp, capturing the time and place effectively and believably, and providing a rational context for the known events. Apart from the loss of Marlowe's death at the height of his genius, the story provides a compelling view of the murkier side of life among the young bloods of the aging Elizabeth's world. Not only a class A unsolved mystery, "The Reckoning" is also important resource for serious readers of late 16th c. poetry and drama. NB: Marlowe is the only playwrite Shakespeare quoted in one of his own works -- a sign of respectful rivalry.

One of the most fascinating books I have ever read!

The Fat of the Land is a 1956 update of Not By Bread Alone, and I will review both here, as they appear to be identical, with the addition of commentary at the front of The Fat of the Land by Frederick J. Stare, Paul Dudley White, and the author, Vilhjalmur Stefansson.

Mr. Stefansson seems to have been quite a character, and led an interesting life of anthropology and arctic exploration. Many controversies surround the man and his actions, which led me to take his words with a grain of salt at the beginning. But his captivating writing style and generosity of spirit soon won me over. I don't know how accurate his interpretation of anthropology would have been considered during his lifetime, and how well it has stood the test of time - I think one should read many sources to formulate an opinion. But I found the various subjects covered in the book quite interesting. I especially enjoyed the chapter titled: "And Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year."

This book tells the story of the 1928 experiment conducted by the Russell Sage Institute of Pathology at Bellevue Hospital in New York and affiliated with the Medical College of Cornell University, in which Karsten Andersen and Mr. Stefansson ate essentially nothing but meat for one year, and how very well they fared on this diet - provided they had substantial amounts of fat as well as lean.

Two chapters of the book discuss scurvy, and give examples of people who became ill (and some who died) with it, in spite of having citrus fruit juice; whereas many traditional groups of people that rarely ate fruits or vegetables never encountered the disease. The author proposes that the necessity in preventing scurvy lay in obtaining fresh foods, whether meat or plant-based. (I am currently reading Weston Price's Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, and he states that American Indians in northern Canada explained to him that eating small parts of adrenal glands of animals prevented the disease. And it looks like vitamin C was originally isolated from adrenal glands by Albert Szent-Györgyi.)

The last five chapters of the book tell everything one would probably ever wish to know about pemmican - originally a "travel food" made from dried lean bison meat combined with rendered fat; occasionally with berries added. Mr. Stefansson sings the praises of this compact and energy-dense food not only to his readers, but tells of his efforts to sway the United States military establishment to include it in rations for soldiers. After reading these chapters, I would like to try pemmican - also biltong, a southern African dried meat which the author mentions.

I first learned of this book in William Campbell Douglass's lively work, The Milk of Human Kindness . . . is Not Pasteurized, and had wished to read it for some time. Mr. Stefansson is also mentioned by Broda Barnes in his classic, Hypothyroidism - Unsuspected Illness; and the arctic explorer and meat-eater opens the first paragraphs in Nina Teicholz's wonderful new book: The Big Fat Surprise.

I will close with the irony that Mr. Stefansson presaged Frances Moore Lappé by 25 years, on page 110: "Finally, if we all started living on meat, to protect our teeth or for some other reason, we would soon come to the end of the world's resources. The most fundamental reason of all the reasons why it is better to live on pork and corn pone than on pork by itself is that if we first feed the corn to a pig we waste something like six-sevenths or seven-eighths of the food value of the corn--not thinking, for the moment, of vitamins, minerals and things of that sort but merely of caloric value."

A Proof of Paleo.

Here it is. This work is the closest thing to proof that we are likely to ever find that a paleo diet is vastly superior to the dietary recommendations made by the dietitians in the employee of the government. Written by one who had vast first hand experience with living a true paleo lifestyle as well as a learned academic, it is both informative and entertaining.

If you're not already convinced that the paleo diet is the answer to degenerative diseases of the Western world, it's only because you haven't read this book nor sincerely tried the paleo diet.

GREAT HEALTH AND LOW CARB DIET BOOK BY ARCTIC EXPLORER STEFANSSON!

Great book by the great arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, though very spendy! To me this book proves that a person can live on zero carbs for an unlimited time and still remain very healthy and without disease! Stefansson spent years living with primitive eskimos whom he found lived exclusively on fish, caribou, seals and whales! These people not only didn't trim the fat but loved it and ate all they could get! Stefansson found them to be the healthiest and happiest people he had ever known! Later on when he returned to civilization he spent a year eating nothing but meat with zero carbs while being observed by some of Americas foremost health and diet experts under laboratory conditions! The results were he thrived as long as he ate lots of fat with the meat! At the end of the year the experts found him to be in excellent health and all of their tests confirmed this to be true! To me this book is well worth the $200 bucks that it is going for!

About the Author
A native of Los Angeles, Justin Henderson spent much of his childhood and young adulthood surfing the California beaches. After his graduation from California State University, Northridge, his career took him to several locations across the country. He worked as an architectural journalist in New York City, and later moved to Seattle, where he worked as a freelance travel and design writer. It was in Seattle that he took up windsurfing, reviving his long-dormant surfing skills and his passion for the ocean. Justin then moved with his wife and daughter to Sayulita, 30 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. In his years living there, Justin learned to love Mexico even more than he did as a child when his family would vacation on Lake Chapala every summer. He is currently working on the latest edition of Moon Puerto Vallarta as well as a memoir of his five years in Sayulita, tentatively called Paradise on the Five Year Plan.

Justin has written guidebooks on destinations ranging from Costa Rica to Los Angeles, and now Oaxaca, as well as six murder mysteries featuring a female travel writer and photographer which are set on Caribbean islands, in Costa Rica, and all over Mexico.

Justin and his family recently returned to Seattle, though he considers anywhere near the Pacific to be home. His first purchase there was a new wetsuit.

Only good for older, affluent tourists

Decent info, but not organized as intuitively as other guides. I also thought the content seems pretty geared toward "on-the beaten path" tourists, as opposed to travelers. That said, it's the only book available on Oaxaca (not just Mexico) that I could find that was new. UPDATE: now that I used it in Oaxaca, I can say it's just not that helpful. It's written like a novel, and is not good for quick reference on the go. Perhaps I'm bias to Lonely Planet, but this will be my last Moon book.

Falls really short of the Moon standard

I'm a devoted Moon buyer, but this one has fallen really short of the mark. As someone else mentioned, the maps and listings are terribly cross-referenced -- you are constantly having to rove and rove to find what you're looking for, when it would have been so easy to design the maps more intuitively -- not to mention that half the listings don't even show up on the maps. Also, the choices are sh*t -- Oaxaca has more than a dozen restaurants. I generally love Moon for its narrative style -- you feel like you're being spoken to by a real human being, who had a subjective but authentic experience -- but this one gives the series a bad name.

it is perfect for a new visitor to Oaxaca and I would ...

Not that much information to be sincere, I know more than the author, we wanted a very detailed guide with much more places and more specific recomendations, it is perfect for a new visitor to Oaxaca and I would really recomend it to first timers, but after being in Oaxaca more than 20 times I think the information is a little thing from what I was expecting.
